Rajmohan Gandhi on James Lawson: How Gandhi Shaped America’s Civil Rights Movement

Date

In an interview with Adrija Roychowdhury, historian and biographer Rajmohan Gandhi discussed his new book on James Lawson. James Lawson was a key figure in the American civil rights movement who trained a generation of civil rights activists in the Gandhian philosophy and methods of non-violence resistance. Rajmohan Gandhi's book is the first and the only biography of Lawson. It shows the deep impact of Mahatma Gandhi's ideas on America. Rajmohan Gandhi spoke about why Mahatma Gandhi appealed to Lawson, how the American civil rights movement taught Gandhi's non-violence to the world, and how, post-independence, much of the developing world looked to India for political inspiration.
